Manapság nagyon divatos a Microsoft szidalmazása. Főleg olyan felhasználók részéről érik vádak a céget, akiknek fogalmuk sincs arról, mit is jelent egy program elkészítése. A profi programozók többsége általában hallgatásba burkolózik ezzel a kérdéssel kapcsolatban, s úgy tűnik, mintha kívülállók szeretnének maradni. Azonban bármennyire paradoxonként hat is, mindkét felet meg lehet érteni.
Végül is mi volt az, amivel a cég nem tudta kielégíteni a felhasználókat? Megpróbálok ebben a cikkben válaszolni erre a kérdésre.
1. Mi a Microsoft Windows?
A vállalat hívei: "A legismertebb szoftver, amiről már a gyerekek is hallottak, az a Microsoft Windows operációs rendszerek sorozata. A legelső verzió óta a vállalat szinte minden második évben megörvendeztet bennünket egy új verzióval. A legutóbbi időszak a legtermékenyebb volt e téren. 1999 és 2002 között 3 új operációs rendszer jelent meg: Windows Millennium, Windows 2000, Windows XP. Erről az utóbbiról részletesebben. A fejlesztők állítása szerint ez a program gyakorlatilag a nulláról íródott. Ezt akár szabad szemmel is észrevehetjük: az interfész nem hasonlítható egyetlen korábbi Windows-verzió interfészéhez sem. A rendszer működőképessége ugyancsak nagyon magas szintű (elegendő megemlíteni, hogy olyan beépített szoftverekkel rendelkezik, mint az Internet Explorer, a Windows Media Player, az Outlook Express, az MSN Messager legutóbbi verziói), vagyis a felhasználónak nem kell fölösleges időt és pénzt fordítania arra, hogy megvásárolja azokat a szoftvereket, melyek ellátják ezt a feladatot. De néhány szót szeretnék szólni a Windows Update szervizről is, melynek segítségével bármikor letölthető valamilyen kiegészítő a rendszerhez, s ami teljesen ingyenesen jár az utóbbihoz."
A vállalat ellenségei: "A Microsoft operációs rendszereinek az ára mindig magasabb volt annál a megengedhető határnál, ami az IT-piacon tapasztalható volt. Ahogy azt sok elemző megjegyzi (természetesen némi iróniával), az operációs rendszer ára minden új verzió esetében mértani haladványként növekszik.
Ismételten meg kell említeni az operációs rendszer megbízhatatlanságát: folyamatosan lehet találni különböző hibákat és feketefoltokat. Ezek pedig nemcsak ahhoz vezethetnek, hogy a rendszer hibásan fog működni, hanem jóval komolyabb problémák is előfordulhatnak, melyek következtében nemcsak az operációs rendszert kell lecserélni. Erre például szolgálhat a Windows XP, amely egész egyszerűn "falja" a klasztereket a merevlemezen, ezzel egyidejűleg törölve a klaszterekben található információt (ezt egyébként folyamatosan cáfolják a Microsoftnál). Az ilyesfajta esetek nem számítanak újdonságnak a Microsoft-felhasználók számára. Ők ugyanis tudják, hogy hasonló meglepetésekre bármikor, bármilyen új Windows-verzió esetében számíthatnak."
2. Microsoft Office
A vállalat hívei: "Nagyon sokan szeretik ezt az irodai csomagot, s ez nem véletlen! A nagyon éles konkurenciaharc közepette a Star Office-szal a Microsoft terméke sosem látott ütemben fejlődik. Mára a termék három (!) legutóbbi verziója (97, 2000, XP) képes kielégíteni a hagyományos felhasználó igényeit, és eközben nem szabad megfeledkeznünk arról sem, hogy a legelső ezek közül már több mint 5 éve van a piacon. Ilyen "hosszú életről" a szoftverek többsége csak álmodhat. Mindezek mellett nem lehet azt mondani, hogy az Office új verziói csak az előző verziók sikerének köszönhetik saját sikerüket. Az új verziók mindig bőségesen rendelkeznek új lehetőségekkel és funkciókkal, melyek többsége egész egyszerűen szükséges. Ezzel kapcsolatban meg kell jegyeznünk az Office új verzióinak jó időpontban történő megjelenést."
A vállalat ellenségei: "Az ár és a hibák - korántsem ez minden, ami elriaszthat ettől a szoftvertől. Mindez a mi időnkben történik, amikor tengernyi olyan ingyenes program van a piacon, melyekkel ugyanazok a feladatok elvégezhetők, mint a Microsoft Office segítségével. Annak ellenére, hogy ez az irodai csomag rengeteg funkcióval bír, a gyakorlatban ezeknek a funkcióknak a többsége egész egyszerűen fölösleges."
3. A vállalat politikája
A vállalat hívei: "A Microsoft fennállásának első napjai óta arra törekszik, hogy a cég termékei alkalmazhatóak legyenek az élet minden területén, az ipari projektektől az otthoni felhasználókig. A vállalat folyamatosan fenntartotta a kapcsolatot a vásárlóival, és az összes lehetséges segítséget biztosította partnereinek. Jelenleg is kapcsolatbant áll különböző kormányokkal, kisebb-nagyobb vállalatokkal a világpiacon, kínálja számukra legújabb termékeit. Innen ered a termékek terjesztőinek hatalmas száma, ami természetesen nagyon kedvező a felhasználók szempontjából."
A vállalat ellenségei: "A vállalat politikájának alapja a PC-piac monopolizálása, amit azzal ér el, hogy felvásárolja a sokat ígérő projekteket, csatolja az operációs rendszerhez a szoftverei többségét, valamint nyomást gyakorol azon kisebb vállalatokra, melyek a későbbiekben konkurensei lehetnek az IT-piacon. Egy kiemelkedő példája ennek a politikának a Lindows cég leállításának kísérlete, amely az "Ablak" operációs rendszerek piacán a Windows-nak komoly konkurenciát jelentő rendszerek fejlesztésével foglalkozik."
Következtetések
Mit lehet mindehhez még hozzátenni? Milyen következtetéseket lehet levonni? Egy biztos: a Microsoft tevékenysége nem egyértelmű. Egyik oldalról a cég arra törekszik, hogy egyre nagyobb szerepet töltsön be a szoftverpiacon, s együttműködjön a többi vállalattal. A másik oldalról a cég politikája a monopolizálásra irányul. A cég programozóinak hibáiról már sokszor volt szó. Ez nem új tény. Azt azonban meg kell jegyezni, hogy olyan nagy projektek megtervezése során, mint a Windows vagy az Office, nem lehet a hibákat elkerülni.
Megpróbáltam bemutatni rövid és érthető formában mindkét oldal érveit. A saját véleményüket viszont önállóan kell megformálniuk, a saját tapasztalataikból kiindulva.
